TAMPA, Floride — Après plus d’un mois sans compétition, Iowa a su faire preuve de maîtrise et de sang-froid pour dominer Vanderbilt 34–27 lors du ReliaQuest Bowl, disputé au Raymond James Stadium. Dans un duel entre deux équipes classées du Top 25, les Hawkeyes ont pris l’ascendant tôt dans la rencontre avant de contenir le retour tardif des Commodores.
Dès le premier drive, Iowa impose le ton. Une longue course de Mark Gronowski met l’attaque sur orbite, avant que Kamari Moulton ne conclue la série par une course d’un yard dans la zone des buts. Solide défensivement, Iowa multiplie les pressions et force Vanderbilt à dégager à plusieurs reprises en début de match. Incapables d’installer durablement leur jeu au sol avec seulement 51 yards, les Commodores ont dû s’en remettre presque exclusivement au bras de Diego Pavia, une dépendance qui a fini par limiter leurs options dans les moments clés.

Malgré un dernier placement de Vanderbilt, Iowa contrôle la fin de match en conservant le ballon jusqu’au bout.
Statistiquement, Pavia a terminé la rencontre avec 347 yards à la passe, deux touchdowns et un score au sol, tout en évoluant sans le futur tight-end NFL Eli Stowers, sa cible principale tout au long de la saison. Gronowski a répondu par une prestation efficace, lançant pour 212 yards et deux touchdowns, tout en ajoutant un score au sol. Iowa s’est également appuyée sur son groupe de tight ends, avec en tête DJ Vonnahme, auteur de l’un des matchs les plus productifs de sa carrière avec sept réceptions pour 146 yards et un touchdown, trouvant à plusieurs reprises des espaces au centre du terrain et dans les tracés intermédiaires.
Vanderbilt a inscrit 24 points en seconde période, mais le départ manqué et la discipline collective d’Iowa ont fait la différence dans ce choc de fin de saison entre équipes classées.

TAMPA, Florida — After more than a month away from competition, Iowa returned with composure and control, defeating Vanderbilt 34–27 in the ReliaQuest Bowl at Raymond James Stadium. In a matchup between two Top 25 teams, the Hawkeyes built an early advantage and withstood a late surge from the Commodores to close out the win.
Iowa set the tone on its opening possession. A long run by Mark Gronowski jump-started the drive before Kamari Moulton finished it with a one-yard touchdown run. Defensively, Iowa applied steady pressure early, forcing multiple Vanderbilt punts and limiting offensive rhythm. The Commodores eventually got on the board in the second quarter with a 41-yard field goal, but struggled to sustain momentum.
Just before halftime, Iowa capitalized on favorable field position once again. Gronowski connected with Reece Vander Zee on a 10-yard touchdown pass in the front corner of the end zone, sending the Hawkeyes into the break with a 14–3 lead.
The third quarter brought a shift in tempo. Iowa struck quickly with a 21-yard touchdown pass to DJ Vonnahme, but Vanderbilt answered immediately. Diego Pavia delivered a perfectly placed 75-yard strike to cut into the deficit. Iowa responded with a 47-yard field goal by Drew Stevens, before Pavia led another scoring drive capped by a touchdown pass. By the end of the quarter, the margin had been trimmed to seven.
Early in the fourth quarter, Iowa regained a two-score cushion on a quarterback sneak by Gronowski. Vanderbilt refused to fold, as Pavia powered into the end zone on an 11-yard run to bring the Commodores back within one possession. Stevens then added a crucial 44-yard field goal, providing Iowa with needed breathing room.
Although Vanderbilt finished with a slight edge in total yardage, 398 to 379, that production masked a structural imbalance. Limited to just 51 rushing yards, the Commodores were forced to rely almost exclusively on Pavia’s arm, a dependency that narrowed their options in key moments. At the same time, Iowa’s defensive pressure, highlighted by four sacks in the first half, repeatedly disrupted Vanderbilt’s rhythm and created difficult third-down situations during attempted momentum swings.
Despite a final Vanderbilt field goal, Iowa controlled the closing minutes by maintaining possession.
Statistically, Pavia finished the game with 347 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing score while operating without Eli Stowers, widely regarded as the best tight end in college football and his primary target throughout the season. Gronowski answered with an efficient performance of his own, throwing for 212 yards and two touchdown passes while adding a score on the ground. Iowa also leaned on its tight end group, led by DJ Vonnahme, who delivered one of the most productive performances of his career with seven receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown, repeatedly finding space over the middle and on intermediate routes.
Vanderbilt scored 24 points in the second half, but the slow start and Iowa’s collective discipline ultimately made the difference in this late-season Top 25 matchup.
