Malgré l'absence de trois titulaires, le New York Liberty n'a clairement pas fait le déplacement à Seattle pour de la figuration. Les championnes en titre ont montré du caractère tout au long de la rencontre, mais ce sont finalement les locales qui se sont imposées 89-79 dans un match haletant de bout en bout.
Un Storm privé de ses stars face à un Liberty diminué
Après un road trip de trois matchs soldé par un bilan de 2 victoires pour 1 défaite (revers face à Golden State) et une victoire convaincante contre Las Vegas vendredi dernier, le Storm de Seattle (8-5) retrouvait ses bases pour accueillir les championnes en titre du New York Liberty (10-2).
Les New-Yorkaises se présentaient considérablement diminuées, privées de leur intérieure All-Star Jonquel Jones (blessée à la cheville lors du match contre Phoenix), de Sabrina Ionescu et de Leonie Fiebich (absente pour l'EuroBasket).
Premier quart-temps : équilibre parfait (22-22)
Le match débute sur un rythme soutenu avec Erica Wheeler qui mène la charge pour Seattle avec 7 points rapides. L'entrée de Dominique Malonga dans les deux dernières minutes apporte un regain d'énergie décisif : entre sa prise de rebond défensif et ses deux points, elle allume une étincelle qui permet aux deux équipes de terminer à égalité (22-22).
Pour New York, Marine Johannes démarre parfaitement sa première titularisation de la saison.
Deuxième quart-temps : festival à trois points (43-42 Seattle)
Après un début de deuxième quart en manque de réussite des deux côtés, les équipes accélèrent sérieusement le rythme dans les cinq dernières minutes.
Du côté de Seattle, le trois-points de Gabby Williams enflamme littéralement la foule, le banc et coach Quinn qui la félicite. Zia Cooke ajoute sa touche avec un autre trois-points, suivie par Skylar Diggins qui en inscrit un de plus.
Mais c'est Marine Johannes qui vole la vedette avec une première mi-temps parfaite : 12 points à 100% de réussite (5/5), dont deux tentatives réussies derrière l'arc.
Le Liberty domine au rebond (23-19), surtout lorsque Dominique Malonga n'est pas sur le parquet. À la pause, Seattle mène d'un petit point (43-42).
Troisième quart-temps : Seattle s'échappe legèrement (68-61 Seattle)
La machine Marine Johannes continue de tourner à plein régime. Toujours à 100% de réussite (7/7), elle sort notamment un magnifique jump shot pour ramener New York à trois points (59-56) à moins de 4 minutes de la fin du quart. Il faudra attendre quelques minutes plus tard pour la voir rater son premier tir de l'après-midi.
Pour Seattle, Nneka Ogwumike (13 points) et Skylar Diggins (19 points) mènent la charge comme depuis le début de saison. Le Storm termine ce troisième acte avec un avantage de 7 points (68-61).
Quatrième quart-temps : la "French Connection" et le feu d'Ogwumike
Un des moments forts de la soirée arrive avec une action spectaculaire : l'interception de Dominique Malonga qui trouve Gabby Williams, laquelle renvoie aussitôt une passe laser qui traverse tout le terrain pour une conclusion facile de Malonga. Cette "French Connection" enflamme littéralement le Climate Pledge Arena.
Mais c'est Nneka Ogwumike qui prend littéralement feu en ce dernier quart. Son trois-points crucial à 1:30 de la fin donne 6 points d'avance à Seattle et s'avère déterminant pour conclure ce match haletant.
Avec ses 26 points au final (12/17 aux tirs), l'intérieure All-Star a été la grande artisane de cette victoire, infligeant la troisième défaite de la saison aux New-Yorkaises.

Despite missing three starters, the New York Liberty certainly didn’t travel to Seattle just to make up the numbers. The defending champions showed grit throughout the game, but it was the home team that came out on top with an 89–79 win in a thrilling battle from start to finish.
A Storm Without Its Stars Faces a Shorthanded Liberty
After a three-game road trip that ended with two wins and a loss (against Golden State) and a convincing victory over Las Vegas last Friday, the Seattle Storm (8–5) returned home to host the reigning WNBA champions, the New York Liberty (10–2).
New York came into the game severely undermanned, missing All-Star forward Jonquel Jones (ankle injury vs. Phoenix), Sabrina Ionescu, and Leonie Fiebich (away for EuroBasket).
First Quarter: A Perfect Balance
The game opened at a fast pace, with Erica Wheeler leading the charge for Seattle with a quick 7 points. The late entry of Dominique Malonga in the final two minutes gave Seattle a crucial boost—her defensive rebound and layup sparked energy that helped both teams end the quarter tied at 22–22.
Marine Johannes, making her first start of the season, got off to an excellent beginning for New York.
Second Quarter: A Three-Point Shootout
After a cold start to the second quarter on both sides, the tempo picked up significantly in the final five minutes.
For Seattle, Gabby Williams’ three-pointer ignited the crowd, the bench, and Coach Noelle Quinn, who applauded her enthusiastically. Zia Cooke followed with another triple, and Skylar Diggins knocked down one of her own.
But Marine Johannes stole the show with a flawless first half: 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting, including two threes.
New York dominated the boards (23–19), especially when Malonga wasn’t on the floor. At halftime, Seattle held a slim one-point lead (43–42).
Third Quarter: Seattle Pulls Ahead Slightly
Marine Johannes continued her spectacular run, hitting a smooth jump shot to bring New York within three (59–56) with under four minutes left in the quarter. She would miss her first shot of the game only a few minutes later.
On Seattle’s side, Nneka Ogwumike (13 points) and Skylar Diggins (19 points) remained the leaders, as they have been all season. The Storm closed the quarter with a 7-point lead (68–61).
Fourth Quarter: The “French Connection” and Ogwumike on Fire
One of the highlights of the night came with a stunning play: Dominique Malonga intercepted a pass, found Gabby Williams, who fired a laser pass across the court back to Malonga for an easy finish. The “French Connection” lit up the Climate Pledge Arena.
But it was Nneka Ogwumike who truly caught fire in the fourth. Her clutch three-pointer with 1:30 left extended Seattle’s lead to 6 and proved to be a dagger in a high-stakes game.
With 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting, the All-Star forward was the clear catalyst in delivering New York just its third loss of the season.
