La soirée ne s’est pas vraiment déroulée comme prévu pour le Seattle Storm, en déplacement à Phoenix ce samedi soir sous la douceur du climat arizonien, pour lancer sa saison 2025.
Défait 81 à 59, le Storm a buté sur deux cactus bien enracinés : Satou Sabally et Alyssa Thomas, toutes deux nouvelles recrues du Mercury. Sabally a inscrit 27 points accompagnés de 6 rebonds, tandis que Thomas s’est illustrée avec 20 points, 7 rebonds et 6 passes décisives, une performance complète qui lui a valu le titre de MVP de la rencontre.
Un départ idéal pour les deux joueuses arrivées respectivement de Dallas et Connecticut à l’intersaison.
Côté Seattle, le manque de réussite a plombé les espoirs : seulement 33,3 % de réussite aux tirs. Skylar Diggins a tout tenté pour garder le navire à flot avec 21 points, 4 passes décisives et 3 rebonds, bien épaulée par l’expérimentée Nneka Ogwumike (12 points, 7 rebonds). Insuffisant face à une équipe du Mercury bien en place et plus efficace des deux côtés du terrain.
Sur une note plus positive, cette rencontre a marqué les débuts de la jeune Dominique Malonga, 19 ans, sélectionnée 2e à la dernière draft. L’intérieure française a inscrit ses premiers points en WNBA sur un layup dans le premier quart-temps, et a terminé la rencontre avec 2 points en un peu moins de dix minutes de jeu. Un moment symbolique pour celle qui incarne déjà l’avenir du Storm.
Autre fait marquant : Gabby Williams a écrit une page d’histoire dès le premier quart-temps de la saison, devenant la première joueuse WNBA à cumuler plusieurs interceptions, contres et passes décisives dans une entame de match. Elle a terminé la soirée avec quatre passes décisives, à égalité avec Skylar Diggins et Li Yueru.
Il n’y a pas de quoi tirer la sonnette d’alarme après une seule rencontre, aussi difficile soit-elle mais le Storm devra rapidement trouver des solutions offensives. Une réaction est attendue dès lundi face aux Dallas Wings de Paige Bueckers, pour éviter d’enchaîner un deuxième revers..

The evening didn’t go as planned for the Seattle Storm, who traveled to Phoenix this Saturday night under the mild Arizona weather to kick off their 2025 season.

There’s no need to panic after just one game, however tough it may have been, but the Storm will need to find offensive solutions quickly. A response is expected as early as Monday, when they host the Dallas Wings and rising star Paige Bueckers, hoping to avoid a second straight loss.
