LES VALKYRIES DOMINENT UN STORM EN RECONSTRUCTION POUR OUVRIR LA SAISON (91-80)

Pour leur premier match de la saison 2026, les Golden State Valkyries se sont imposées 91-80 sur le parquet du Seattle Storm, dans une rencontre marquée à la fois par le début d'une nouvelle ère à Seattle et par le retour de Gabby Williams face à son ancienne équipe. La soirée a également été portée par les performances des Françaises Janelle Salaün et Dominique Malonga, meilleures marqueuses de leur équipe respective.
Une première mi-temps disputée, puis Seattle craque après la pause
Les deux équipes ont démarré la rencontre sur un rythme élevé, avec un premier quart-temps offensif conclu sur le score de 24-23 en faveur du Storm. Mais Seattle, qui disputait son premier match sous les ordres de sa nouvelle entraîneuse Sonia Raman, n'a pas réussi à maintenir cette intensité.
Après un deuxième quart-temps déjà plus compliqué offensivement (26-17 pour Golden State), le Storm a perdu pied au retour des vestiaires. Seattle n'a inscrit que 12 points dans le troisième acte, permettant aux Valkyries de prendre définitivement le contrôle de la rencontre après avoir mené 50-41 à la pause.
Gabby Williams solide face à son ancienne équipe
Le retour de Gabby Williams à Seattle constituait l'une des principales storylines de la soirée. L'internationale française, qui portait les couleurs du Storm la saison passée, a livré une prestation complète des deux côtés du terrain avec 7 points, 6 rebonds, 4 passes et 1 interception en 24 minutes.
Toujours aussi précieuse défensivement, Williams continue de s'imposer comme l'un des piliers de l'équilibre collectif des Valkyries.
Janelle Salaün confirme son importance dans le projet des Valkyries
Côté Golden State, Janelle Salaün a terminé meilleure marqueuse du match avec 20 points, grâce notamment à une excellente adresse à longue distance (5/11 à 3 points).
La Française confirme déjà son rôle central dans l'attaque des Valkyries, dans une équipe qui a particulièrement fait la différence derrière l'arc tout au long de la soirée.
Golden State a également pu compter sur l'excellente entrée de Kaitlyn Chen. La meneuse d'origine taïwanaise a signé le meilleur match de sa jeune carrière WNBA avec 14 points en 16 minutes (5/10 au tir, 2/3 à 3 points), apportant vitesse et agressivité en sortie de banc.
Veronica Burton, élue Most Improved Player la saison dernière, a parfaitement dirigé l'attaque avec 16 points, 6 passes et 2 interceptions, tandis que Kayla Thornton a ajouté 13 points et 8 rebonds.
Dominique Malonga continue d'écrire l'histoire
Malgré la défaite, Dominique Malonga a une nouvelle fois marqué les esprits pour Seattle. La Française a terminé meilleure marqueuse du Storm avec 21 points, 8 rebonds et 3 passes en 29 minutes, tout en shootant à 8/15 au tir.
En captant son cinquième rebond du match, Malonga est devenue la plus jeune joueuse de l'histoire de la WNBA à atteindre les 200 rebonds en carrière, à seulement 20 ans.
L'ancienne numéro 2 de la draft 2025 continue ainsi d'accumuler les records de précocité dans la ligue après être déjà devenue la plus jeune joueuse à enregistrer un double-double ainsi qu'à atteindre les 100 points et 100 rebonds en carrière.
Seul point perfectible dans sa soirée : son adresse aux lancers francs (5/9), un secteur dans lequel Seattle espère encore la voir progresser.
Un Storm diminué mais combatif
Privé d'Ezi Magbegor, blessée au pied droit lors des qualifications FIBA avec l'Australie et absente pour plusieurs semaines, ainsi que de la rookie Awa Fam, troisième choix de la draft 2026 actuellement toujours engagée avec Valencia Basket en Espagne, le Storm devait composer avec un effectif jeune et largement remanié.
Malgré cela, Seattle a continué à se battre jusqu'au bout.
Jade Melbourne a notamment symbolisé cet état d'esprit. La meneuse australienne, victime d'une lourde chute lui ayant coûté une dent, est revenue sur le parquet pour terminer avec 13 points, 3 passes et 2 rebonds.
Zia Cooke a ajouté 15 points après une solide première mi-temps, tandis que Flau'jae Johnson a inscrit son premier panier WNBA en saison régulière seulement 11 secondes après son entrée en jeu, un tir à 3 points face à l'équipe qui l'avait sélectionnée avant son échange le soir de la draft. Elle termine la rencontre avec 12 points.
Les chiffres qui ont fait la différence
Golden State a dominé la circulation du ballon avec 22 passes décisives contre 16 pour Seattle, tout en se montrant beaucoup plus discipliné dans la gestion des possessions.
Le Storm a perdu 14 ballons, concédant 12 points sur turnovers, contre seulement 9 pertes de balle et 5 points accordés par les Valkyries.
L'adresse extérieure a également pesé lourd : Golden State a converti 15 de ses 37 tentatives à 3 points (41 %), contre 9/26 pour Seattle (35 %).

Les Valkyries lanceront officiellement leur saison à domicile dimanche 10 mai face au Phoenix Mercury au Chase Center.
Pour Seattle, ce début de saison confirme que la reconstruction demandera du temps. En attendant les retours d'Ezi Magbegor et d'Awa Fam, le Storm devra continuer à construire autour de Dominique Malonga et de sa jeune génération prometteuse.

For their first game of the 2026 season, the Golden State Valkyries defeated the Seattle Storm 91-80 on Friday night, in a matchup marked by the beginning of a new era in Seattle and the return of Gabby Williams against her former team. The night was also highlighted by strong performances from French stars Janelle Salaün and Dominique Malonga, who both finished as their team’s leading scorers.
A competitive first half before Seattle collapsed after halftime
Both teams opened the game with a fast offensive pace, with Seattle leading 24-23 after the first quarter. But the Storm, playing their first regular season game under new head coach Sonia Raman, struggled to maintain that intensity.
After already being outscored 26-17 in the second quarter, Seattle completely lost momentum coming out of halftime. The Storm managed only 12 points in the third quarter, allowing the Valkyries to take full control after leading 50-41 at the break.
Gabby Williams delivers a solid performance against her former team
The return of Gabby Williams to Seattle was one of the main storylines entering the game. The French international, who played for the Storm last season, delivered another well-rounded performance with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal in 24 minutes.
As usual, Williams made her biggest impact defensively and continued to establish herself as one of the key pieces in Golden State’s system.
Janelle Salaün confirms her importance to Golden State
For the Valkyries, Janelle Salaün finished as the game’s leading scorer with 20 points, including an impressive 5-for-11 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
The French forward already looks like one of the offensive pillars of the franchise, especially in a game where Golden State consistently won the battle from three point range.
Golden State also received a major boost from second year guard Kaitlyn Chen, who delivered the best performance of her young WNBA career with 14 points in just 16 minutes off the bench while shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from deep.
Veronica Burton, last season’s Most Improved Player, controlled the pace of the game with 16 points, 6 assists and 2 steals, while Kayla Thornton added 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Dominique Malonga continues to make history
Despite the loss, Dominique Malonga once again stood out for Seattle. The French center led the Storm with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in 29 minutes while shooting 8-for-15 from the field.
By grabbing her fifth rebound of the night, Malonga became the youngest player in WNBA history to reach 200 career rebounds at just 20 years old.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft continues to add to her growing list of age related records after previously becoming the youngest player in league history to record a double-double and to reach both 100 career points and 100 career rebounds.
The only blemish on her performance came at the free throw line, where she finished 5-for-9.
A shorthanded but resilient Storm squad
Without Ezi Magbegor, who is sidelined for several weeks with a foot injury suffered during FIBA competition with Australia, and rookie Awa Fam, the third overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft who is still finishing her season with Valencia Basket in Spain, Seattle entered the season with a young and heavily reshaped roster.
Still, the Storm continued to compete until the final buzzer.
Australian guard Jade Melbourne embodied that fighting spirit after losing a tooth during a hard fall before returning to the court to finish with 13 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.
Zia Cooke added 15 points after a strong first half, while Flau'jae Johnson scored her first regular-season WNBA basket just 11 seconds after checking into the game, knocking down a three pointer against the franchise that originally drafted her before trading her on draft night. She finished with 12 points.
The numbers that made the difference
Golden State moved the ball far more effectively throughout the game, finishing with 22 assists compared to Seattle’s 16.
The Valkyries also took much better care of the basketball, committing only 9 turnovers while Seattle finished with 14 giveaways that led to 12 Golden State points.
Three point shooting also proved decisive. The Valkyries shot 15-for-37 from beyond the arc (41 percent), while Seattle finished 9-for-26 (35 percent).
What’s next?
The Valkyries will officially open their home schedule on Sunday, May 10 against the Phoenix Mercury at the Chase Center.
For Seattle, the season opener confirmed that the rebuilding process will take time. Until the returns of Ezi Magbegor and Awa Fam, the Storm will continue building around Dominique Malonga and its promising young core.
