Le college football est de retour : ce qu'il faut retenir de la Week 0
La saison 2026 s'est ouverte ce samedi avec la traditionnelle « Week Zero », un hors-d'œuvre de huit matchs FBS avant que le reste du pays n'entre en scène la semaine suivante. Et pour une mise en bouche, elle aura servi son lot de surprises.
Belichick commence sa deuxième année par une revanche
Le premier match de la saison se jouait à Dublin, sous la pluie de l'Aviva Stadium, dans le cadre de l'Aer Lingus Classic. North Carolina y a battu TCU 15-10, Billy Edwards Jr. lançant pour 232 yards pour ses débuts et Aeron Burrell convertissant deux field goals.
Un an plus tôt, les Horned Frogs avaient écrasé les Tar Heels 48-14 à domicile et gâché les débuts universitaires de Bill Belichick.
Le tournant tient à une action improbable : menée 10-3, North Carolina est passée devant 12-10 sur un safety à 1 min 49 de la mi-temps, le punter de TCU ayant dégagé le ballon dans le fond de sa propre end zone après un snap passé bien au-dessus de sa tête. Les Horned Frogs n'ont plus marqué ensuite, échouant deux fois sur quatrième tentative courte en territoire adverse, dont un dernier ballon perdu par Jaden Craig à quatrième et 2 sur la ligne des 10. Ils avaient marqué au moins 30 points lors de leurs dix derniers matchs d'ouverture, la plus longue série active en FBS. Côté UNC, l'attaque de Bobby Petrino a produit 141 yards dans le seul premier quart-temps, un total jamais atteint l'an passé sur une période d'ouverture.
USC assure, Virginia impressionne
Seule équipe classée à jouer ce week-end, USC (14e) a dominé San Jose State 42-26. Jayden Maiava a lancé pour 286 yards et deux touchdowns et en a couru un troisième, terminant à 25 passes réussies sur 29, tandis que Trent Mosley captait sept ballons pour 118 yards. USC menait encore 35-3 avant que Luke Weaver ne conduise trois drives tardifs contre les remplaçants. Le prochain classement AP Top 25 ne sortira que le mardi 8 septembre, après la Week 1.
Le vrai coup d'éclat est venu de Charlottesville. Virginia a écrasé NC State 34-8 dans un match initialement prévu à Rio de Janeiro, devant un stade à guichets fermés. Beau Pribula a couru pour 110 yards et lancé pour 155 yards et deux touchdowns, les Cavaliers totalisant 413 yards dont 258 au sol contre 168 pour les Wolfpack. CJ Bailey a terminé à 84 yards à la passe, son plus bas en carrière, et l'attaque de NC State a signé cinq three-and-out sur douze possessions. C'est la première défaite inaugurale du programme depuis 2017.
Stanford prend enfin sa revanche : 37-27 contre Hawai'i
Personne n'avait pris ce match à la légère. En Week 0 l'an dernier, Hawai'i avait battu Stanford 23-20 sur un field goal de 38 yards de Kansei Matsuzawa à la sirène, la première victoire des Rainbow Warriors sur le Cardinal en cinq confrontations.
La revanche a suivi un scénario tout aussi haletant, mais dans l'autre sens. Mené de 16 points au début du troisième quart, Hawai'i a répliqué avec 20 points consécutifs pour prendre les commandes 27-23 à quatre minutes du terme. Micah Ford a redonné trois points d'avance à Stanford avec son troisième touchdown de la soirée à 1 min 41, avant que Tevarua Tafiti n'arrache le ballon des mains de Micah Alejado sur un sack et le rapporte 31 yards jusqu'à l'en-but.
Florida State s'en sort sans convaincre
Favoris de 31 points et demi face à New Mexico State, les Seminoles n'ont jamais été menés mais n'ont jamais rassuré : 17-7 à la pause, avant que les Aggies ne reviennent à un touchdown en début de troisième quart. La délivrance est venue au quatrième quart, avec une course sinueuse de 52 yards d'Ousmane Kromah, puis un touchdown d'un yard du même joueur à 4 min 01 pour porter l'écart à trois scores. Ashton Daniels, transfuge de Stanford puis d'Auburn, a terminé à 17 passes sur 27 pour 202 yards, un touchdown et une interception, souvent sous pression derrière une ligne offensive en difficulté. Trey Hedden a répliqué avec 272 yards et deux touchdowns pour les Aggies. Depuis la saison 13-0 et le titre ACC de 2023, Mike Norvell affiche un bilan de 7-17.
Deux programmes changent de dimension, avec des fortunes diverses
North Dakota State, dix fois championne FCS depuis 2011, disputait son premier match en FBS comme membre football de la Mountain West, et l'a remporté 33-7 face à Jacksonville State, avec un touchdown dès son drive inaugural. Les Bison de Tim Polasek, 12-1 l'an dernier, ne seront toutefois éligibles à un bowl et au College Football Playoff qu'en 2028, le temps de la période de transition. Sacramento State, qui rejoint de son côté la MAC en football, a connu des débuts plus rudes : défaite 28-17 à Eastern Michigan.
Une dernière ?
Détail qui pourrait faire date : cette Week 0 est peut-être la dernière du genre. Le comité de supervision de la FBS a adopté vendredi une nouvelle date de première rencontre fixée au jeudi de ce qui s'appelle aujourd'hui la Week 0, avec une saison se terminant le samedi suivant Thanksgiving, à partir de 2027.
Les équipes gagneraient ainsi une semaine de repos supplémentaire, soit 14 semaines pour disputer 12 matchs. Si la réforme entre bien en vigueur, cette journée du 29 août 2026 pourrait donc rester comme la dernière véritable Week 0 du college football.

The 2026 season opened Saturday with the traditional "Week Zero," an eight-game FBS appetizer before the rest of the country takes the field a week later. For a warm-up act, it delivered plenty of surprises.
Belichick opens Year 2 with a revenge win
The season's first game was played in Dublin, in the rain at Aviva Stadium, as part of the Aer Lingus Classic. North Carolina beat TCU 15-10 there, with Billy Edwards Jr. throwing for 232 yards in his debut and Aeron Burrell converting two field goals. A year earlier, the Horned Frogs had crushed the Tar Heels 48-14 in Chapel Hill and spoiled Bill Belichick's college coaching debut.
The turning point came on an improbable play: trailing 10-3, North Carolina went ahead 12-10 on a safety with 1:49 left in the first half, after TCU's punter kicked the ball out of the back of his own end zone following a snap that sailed well over his head. The Horned Frogs never scored again, coming up short twice on fourth-and-short in Tar Heels territory, including a final incompletion from Jaden Craig on fourth-and-2 from the 10. They had scored at least 30 points in each of their last ten season openers, the longest active streak in the FBS. For UNC, Bobby Petrino's offense produced 141 yards in the first quarter alone, a total the Tar Heels never reached in an opening quarter last season.
USC takes care of business, Virginia impresses
The only ranked team in action this weekend, No. 14 USC handled San Jose State 42-26. Jayden Maiava threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third, finishing 25 of 29, while Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards. USC still led 35-3 before Luke Weaver engineered three late scoring drives against the backups. The next AP Top 25 poll won't be released until Tuesday, September 8, after Week 1.
The real statement came from Charlottesville. Virginia routed NC State 34-8 in a game originally scheduled for Rio de Janeiro, in front of a sellout crowd. Beau Pribula ran for 110 yards and threw for another 155 and two touchdowns as the Cavaliers piled up 413 total yards, 258 of them on the ground, against 168 for the Wolfpack. CJ Bailey finished with a career-low 84 passing yards, and the NC State offense went three-and-out on five of its twelve drives. It's the program's first season-opening loss since 2017.
Stanford finally gets its revenge: 37-27 over Hawai'i
Nobody took this one lightly. In Week 0 last year, Hawai'i beat Stanford 23-20 on a 38-yard walk-off field goal from Kansei Matsuzawa, the Rainbow Warriors' first win over the Cardinal in five meetings.
The rematch followed just as tense a script, in the other direction. Down 16 points early in the third quarter, Hawai'i answered with 20 unanswered points to lead 27-23 with four minutes left. Micah Ford put Stanford back in front by three with his third touchdown of the night at 1:41, before Tevarua Tafiti strip-sacked Micah Alejado and returned the ball 31 yards to the end zone.
Florida State gets by without convincing
A 31.5-point favorite against New Mexico State, the Seminoles never trailed but never looked comfortable either: 17-7 at the break, before the Aggies pulled back within a touchdown early in the third quarter. Relief came in the fourth, on a weaving 52-yard run from Ousmane Kromah, then a one-yard touchdown from the same player with 4:01 left to push the lead to three scores. Ashton Daniels, a transfer from Stanford and then Auburn, finished 17 of 27 for 202 yards with a touchdown and an interception, often under pressure behind a struggling offensive line. Trey Hedden answered with 272 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies. Since the 13-0 season and ACC title of 2023, Mike Norvell is 7-17.
Two programs move up, with mixed results
North Dakota State, a ten-time FCS champion since 2011, played its first FBS game as a football-only member of the Mountain West, and won it 33-7 against Jacksonville State, scoring a touchdown on its opening drive. Tim Polasek's Bison, 12-1 a year ago, won't be eligible for a bowl or the College Football Playoff until 2028, however, while the transition period runs its course. Sacramento State, which is joining the MAC in football, had a rougher introduction: a 28-17 loss at Eastern Michigan.
The last one?
One detail that may end up mattering: this Week 0 could be the last of its kind. On Friday, the FBS Oversight Committee adopted a new first-contest date set for the Thursday of what is currently called Week 0, with the season ending on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, starting in 2027. Teams would gain an extra bye week, giving them 14 weeks to play 12 games. If the change takes effect as planned, August 29, 2026 could go down as college football's last true Week 0.
