College football delivered a spectacular night on Thursday, headlined by an offensive explosion in Texas and an unexpected comeback in Virginia. In Denton, North Texas held off Florida Atlantic 48-41 in a game where the two teams combined for 1,167 yards of offense. In Harrisonburg, Troy erased a 14-point deficit to take down James Madison 24-21 in overtime. Here’s a look back at Thursday night’s biggest games.

FAU and North Texas: A Clash of Offenses

At DATCU Stadium, Florida Atlantic and North Texas, two of the most productive offenses in the American Conference, met in a game that promised plenty of points. ESPN was on site and even broadcast SportsCenter live from campus, a rare spotlight for the Mean Green. North Texas came in averaging 43.1 points per game, compared to 37.3 for FAU, and neither team disappointed.

For Zach Kittley’s Owls, this loss stings. They were coming off a short week after a wild 51-49 win over Rice the previous Saturday, and they matched North Texas blow for blow for three quarters.

Easton Messer Makes FAU History

Despite the loss, the night belonged in part to Easton Messer. The fifth-year receiver set a program record with 16 receptions, catching every ball thrown his way, for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Sixteen targets, sixteen catches: North Texas never found an answer. Mean Green head coach Neal Brown admitted after the game that his defense tried everything against Messer, without success.

Quarterback Caden Veltkamp also had a historic night. He finished with a season-high 452 yards and five touchdowns, tying his career high, on 37-of-56 passing. The Veltkamp-Messer duo is establishing itself as one of the most productive offensive partnerships in the Group of Five this season. A week earlier against Rice, Messer had already scored five touchdowns, receiving, rushing and on a punt return.

How the Game Unfolded

FAU struck first. An 18-yard touchdown pass from Veltkamp to Branden Hoch gave the Owls a 10-3 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter turned into an offensive showcase. North Texas tied the game, then Veltkamp rolled to his left and found Messer for a 27-yard touchdown, an improvised play that brought the Owls’ sideline to its feet.

The Mean Green answered twice, including a 59-yard run by Jahiem White, but Veltkamp found Messer again for a 12-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left before halftime to tie the game 24-24.

Just before the break, FAU’s defense also produced the most viral play of the night. White tried to hurdle defenders to pick up a first down. But Travis Jackson hit him in midair, forcing a fumble that was recovered by defensive lineman Tycoolhill Luman.

The turning point came in the third quarter. North Texas defensive end Brayden Knox stripped Veltkamp on a sack, and the Mean Green recovered. They quickly took advantage to build their first two-score lead, 34-24. FAU responded behind running back Kaden Shields-Dutton, who scored on a 22-yard shovel pass, but White scored again just before the end of the quarter to make it 41-31.

The Owls never gave up. Messer pulled FAU within 41-38 with 8:26 remaining on a 34-yard touchdown, before Tayven Jackson answered with a 2-yard pass to Kyle Koch. After a 43-yard field goal by Collin Rogers, the Owls tried an onside kick, but North Texas receiver Baron Tipton recovered it and the Mean Green held on.

What FAU Was Missing

Held to just 71 yards on 28 carries, FAU never managed to balance its offense. North Texas took advantage to hold the ball longer and set the tempo, with more than 35 minutes of possession compared to barely 25 for the Owls. On the other side, Mean Green quarterback Tayven Jackson completed 33 of 46 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns, while White added 193 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Receiver Justin Stevenson rounded out North Texas’ “big three” with 119 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, North Texas (6-2) became bowl eligible and improved to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 2004, when it was a member of the Sun Belt. FAU falls to 5-3 and 2-2 in conference. There’s no break for the Owls: they host UTSA, the American’s unbeaten leader, next Thursday.

Troy Stuns James Madison in Overtime

In Harrisonburg, Troy pulled off the upset with a 24-21 win over James Madison at Bridgeforth Stadium. Down 14 points at halftime, the Trojans won it in overtime on a 27-yard field goal by Hayden Wolfe.

James Madison looked in control, leading 21-7 at halftime behind two touchdown passes from Camden Coleman and a rushing score from Seth Cromwell. But everything changed in the second half. Defensive back Justin Powe intercepted a pass from JC Evans and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown. He finished with three interceptions, tying the school’s single-game record set by Ronnie Shelley in 1968. Jaheim Merriweather then tied the game on a 28-yard run.

In overtime, Keno Jones stopped Cromwell on fourth-and-1 at the 5-yard line. Wolfe, who had missed a 49-yard field goal at the end of regulation, made up for it. James Madison turned the ball over five times, and the loss snapped its 11-game home winning streak. It was also a rematch of the 2025 Sun Belt Championship Game, which the Dukes won 31-14. Troy improves to 4-4 (2-2 in conference), while James Madison (7-2, 4-2) suffered its second straight overtime loss.

The Rest of the Night

In a far less competitive game, South Carolina State routed Morgan State 51-10 in Baltimore in a lopsided FCS matchup. The college football weekend really gets going Friday night, with Baylor visiting UCF and Tulane traveling to Charlotte. Saturday brings a big Halloween slate, including Washington at Nebraska.
