TEXAS HOLDS OFF LATE VANDERBILT RALLY, 34–31, IN AUSTIN

AUSTIN, Texas — No. 20 Texas survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback from No. 9 Vanderbilt to earn a 34–31 win Saturday at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, holding on after recovering an onside kick in the final seconds.
Arch Manning delivered one of his most efficient performances of the season, throwing for 328 yards and three touchdowns, while Diego Pavia once again proved why he’s among the nation’s most dynamic quarterbacks, accounting for 408 total yards and four scores in defeat.
Longhorns set the tone early
Texas wasted no time striking first. On the game’s opening snap, Manning connected deep with Ryan Wingo for a 75-yard touchdown, igniting the home crowd and giving the Longhorns a 7–0 lead only 11 seconds in. After a fumble forced by freshman edge Colin Simmons set up a 39-yard field goal by Mason Shipley, Manning extended the margin with a 6-yard touchdown pass to CJ Baxter late in the first quarter.
By the time the opening frame ended, Texas led 17–0 and had out-gained Vanderbilt 171–86. The Commodores’ only early points came on a Brock Taylor 44-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.
Moments later, Quintrevion Wisner powered through the left side for a 4-yard touchdown run to push the Longhorns’ advantage to 24–3. Vanderbilt finally broke through before halftime when Eli Stowers caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Pavia, trimming the deficit to 24–10 heading into the break.
Manning stays sharp as Texas pulls away
Manning, cleared earlier in the week after a concussion, showed no lingering effects. He guided an 11-play, 93-yard march early in the third quarter, capping it with a 6-yard touchdown strike to Emmett Mosley V. Shipley later added a 37-yard field goal, giving Texas what looked like a comfortable 34–10 cushion entering the final period.
Through three quarters, the Longhorns had racked up 388 yards to Vanderbilt’s 185, dominating both sides of the line.
Pavia ignites a furious rally
But the Commodores weren’t done. Pavia began improvising, extending plays and challenging the Texas secondary. He first scrambled for a 25-yard touchdown run with just over ten minutes remaining, cutting the deficit to 34–16.
On the next drive, he hit Stowers again—this time for 67 yards—then found Junior Sherrill for the two-point conversion to make it 34–24.
Vanderbilt’s defense forced a missed 51-yard field goal by Shipley, giving Pavia one last chance. The redshirt senior orchestrated a 12-play, 89-yard drive, finishing with an 8-yard touchdown to Richie Hoskins with 33 seconds left. That brought the score to 34–31, but Texas cleanly recovered the ensuing onside kick and kneeled out the clock.
By the numbers
Manning finished 25 of 33 for 328 yards, three touchdowns, and no turnovers. Wingo led Texas receivers with 89 yards, while Wisner contributed 75 rushing yards and a score.
For Vanderbilt, Pavia went 27 of 38 for 365 yards and three touchdowns through the air, adding 43 yards and a rushing score. Stowers caught 7 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Sherrill added 83 yards receiving.
Despite being out-gained 488–465, Texas’s early surge and zero turnovers proved decisive. The Longhorns improved to 7–2 (4–1 SEC), while Vanderbilt dropped to 7–2 (3–2).
