Le No. 5 Georgia a encore eu besoin d’un finish maîtrisé pour éviter la catastrophe. Menés dans le dernier quart par une équipe de Florida remobilisée après le limogeage de Billy Napier, les Bulldogs ont finalement arraché une victoire 24–20, préservant leurs espoirs dans la course au titre de la SEC.
Une réaction courageuse des Gators
Sous la houlette de l’entraîneur intérimaire Billy Gonzales, les Gators ont fait preuve de caractère. Menés 17–10, ils ont d’abord égalisé grâce à une course de Jadan Baugh, avant de prendre les devants 20–17 sur un field goal record de 54 yards de Trey Smack au début du quatrième quart. Mais les occasions manquées ont fini par peser lourd : deux quatrièmes tentatives infructueuses dans le dernier quart ont offert à Georgia la brèche dont elle avait besoin.
Bowens fait la différence
Alors que Florida menait 20–17 et semblait en contrôle, la défense de Georgia a tenu bon sur un 4e & 1 à la ligne des 18 yards. Les Bulldogs ont ensuite remonté le terrain en sept actions, conclues par une course de 36 yards de Chauncey Bowens pour le touchdown de la victoire à 4 min 36 de la fin.Gunner Stockton (20/29, 223 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) a mené l’attaque avec calme, tandis que Bowens cumulait 70 yards au sol sur un total de 138 pour son équipe.
La passe fatale
Sur la dernière possession des Gators, DJ Lagway a tenté de relancer l’espoir sur une 4e & 4 depuis la ligne des 30. Sa passe vers Eugene Wilson III a été déviée par Ellis Robinson IV (sous la pression de Joenel Aguero, scellant le turnover on downs à 3 min 13 de la fin. Georgia a ensuite gardé la possession et écoulé l’horloge pour une cinquième victoire consécutive dans la rivalité.
Wilson III en lumière malgré la défaite
En l’absence de Vernell Brown III et Aidan Mizell, Wilson III a brillé : 9 réceptions pour 121 yards et un touchdown de 40 yards. Le jeu au sol de Baugh (15 courses, 72 yards, 1 TD) a tenu le coup, mais Florida n’a converti que 2 de 11 troisièmes tentatives et a manqué ses 2 quatrièmes tentatives, un déficit rédhibitoire face à une défense du calibre de Georgia.
Une victoire essentielle pour les Bulldogs
Malgré une performance irrégulière et quatre punts consécutifs en première mi-temps, Georgia a dominé la possession (42 jeux offensifs à 22 à la pause) et a su répondre dans les moments clés. Avec ce succès, Kirby Smart et ses Bulldogs passent à 7-1 (5-1 SEC) et gardent le contrôle de leur destin dans la conférence, avant d’affronter Texas et Georgia Tech.
Pour Florida (3-5, 2-3 SEC), la tâche se complique : il faudra trois victoires sur les quatre derniers matchs pour éviter une saison perdante. L’ère Gonzales débute sans miracle, mais avec un esprit combatif retrouvé.

No. 5 Georgia survived another close call. Tested deep into the fourth quarter by a determined Florida squad playing its first game under interim coach Billy Gonzales, the Bulldogs escaped Jacksonville with a 24–20 win that keeps their SEC championship hopes intact.
GUTSY GATORS FALL JUST SHORT
Florida delivered one of its most spirited performances of the season, showing fight and cohesion after a turbulent week that saw Billy Napier’s dismissal. Quarterback DJ Lagway (15-for-24, 166 yards, one touchdown) led the Gators to a 20–17 lead early in the fourth quarter after Trey Smack drilled a school-record ninth career field goal of 50 yards or more, a 54-yarder that briefly silenced the Georgia crowd.
But the Gators’ aggressiveness came back to haunt them. Two failed fourth-down conversions in the final nine minutes turned the tide against them, allowing Georgia to complete yet another late comeback in this storied rivalry.
BOWENS DELIVERS THE DAGGER
Trailing 20–17, Georgia marched 82 yards in seven plays, capped by a 36-yard touchdown run from Chauncey Bowens with 4:36 remaining. The sophomore running back finished with 70 yards, while quarterback Gunner Stockton (20-of-29, 223 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) showed composure in crunch time to steer the Bulldogs back in front.
The defense then took over, sealing the outcome with its trademark physicality.
THE DECISIVE PLAY
On Florida’s final drive, facing 4th-and-4 at its own 30, Lagway looked left for Eugene Wilson III, but Ellis Robinson IV (#1) broke up the pass under heavy pressure from Joenel Aguero (#8). The incompletion resulted in a turnover on downs, and Georgia ran out the clock from there. Stockton even slid to a stop at the 1-yard line instead of scoring, choosing to end the game the smart way.
It was Georgia’s fifth straight win over Florida, the program’s longest streak since 1978–83.
WILSON SHINES IN DEFEAT
With Vernell Brown III and Aidan Mizell sidelined, sophomore receiver Eugene Wilson III turned in the best game of his season: nine catches, 121 yards, and a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Running back Jadan Baugh added 72 yards and a score, but the Gators’ efficiency faltered when it mattered most, converting just 2-of-11 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth.
BULLDOGS STILL CONTROL THEIR DESTINY
Despite stretches of inconsistency — including four straight punts and an interception in the first half — Georgia controlled the tempo, running nearly twice as many plays (42 to 22 at halftime). Zachariah Branch (10 receptions, 112 yards) provided key chain-moving catches, while the defense made stops when it absolutely had to.
Now 7-1 overall (5-1 SEC), Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs remain alive in the SEC title chase, with major tests ahead against Texas and Georgia Tech.
Florida, meanwhile, falls to 3-5 (2-3 SEC) and will need to win three of its final four games to avoid a losing record. The Gonzales era begins with disappointment, but also a spark of renewed fight, proof that the Gators haven’t quit on the season just yet.
