HARRISONBURG (VA) — James Madison a présenté l’un de ses matchs les plus maîtrisés de la saison pour décrocher son premier titre de Sun Belt, dominant Troy 31–14 et renforçant au passage son dossier auprès du comité du College Football Playoff. Avec ce succès, les Dukes portent leur bilan à 12–1 et restent en embuscade pour une place dans le nouveau format à 12 équipes.
Le tournant du match est venu d’une seconde mi-temps totalement étouffante : la défense de JMU n’a concédé aucun point, totalisant 8 sacks et un touchdown défensif sur un strip sack récupéré dans l’en-but par Drew Spinogatti. Le leader du front, Sahir West, a livré une performance de référence : 10 plaquages, 5 solos, 3 sacks et 5.5 TFL.
Knight en soirée historique
Offensivement, la star du match fut sans conteste Wayne Knight. Le running back a porté l’attaque à lui seul, explosant pour 212 yards au sol, un touchdown, et la plus longue action de l’histoire du Sun Belt Championship : un sprint de 73 yards dès le deuxième quart-temps, déclenchant l’explosion du Bridgeforth Stadium.
Au sol, JMU a cumulé 318 yards sur 42 courses (7,6 yards par portée), imposant un rapport de force que Troy n’a jamais su contenir.
Barnett III scelle le titre
Le quarterback Alonza Barnett III a géré efficacement le tempo (10/25, 93 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) et a inscrit l’action décisive du quatrième quart : une course de 26 yards qui a porté l’avance à +10 avant que la défense n’achève le travail une minute plus tard.
Troy combatif mais limité
Les Trojans, pourtant largement outsiders, sont restés dans le match jusqu’au début du quatrième quart. Goose Crowder a inscrit un touchdown au sol, Tae Meadows un autre, mais le jeu au sol a été annihilé : –26 yards cumulés, les sacks ramenant Troy en négatif malgré quelques éclairs dans les airs (196 yards pour Crowder, 82 pour RaRa Thomas).

Pour espérer intégrer le CFP, JMU doit désormais compter sur une victoire de Duke en finale de l’ACC. Sans ce scénario, les Dukes devraient se diriger vers un troisième bowl consécutif et tourner la page avant l’arrivée prochaine de Billy Napier, annoncé comme le futur head coach du programme.

HARRISONBURG (VA) — James Madison delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, claiming its first Sun Belt championship with a 31–14 win over Troy and strengthening its case in front of the College Football Playoff committee. With the victory, the Dukes rise to 12–1 and remain firmly in the hunt for a berth in the new 12-team CFP format.
The turning point came in a suffocating second half in which JMU’s defense pitched a shutout, recorded eight sacks, and produced a defensive touchdown on a strip sack recovered in the end zone by Drew Spinogatti. Defensive end Sahir West set the tone all night with a dominant stat line: 10 tackles, 5 solos, 3 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.
Knight’s historic night
Offensively, the star of the game was unquestionably Wayne Knight. The running back carried the offense on his shoulders, erupting for 212 rushing yards and a touchdown, including the longest play in Sun Belt Championship history — a 73-yard burst early in the second quarter that sent Bridgeforth Stadium into a frenzy.

A resilient but limited Troy
The Trojans, heavy underdogs entering the matchup, stayed within reach until early in the fourth. Goose Crowder scored on a keeper, and Tae Meadows added another short touchdown, but the run game was completely overwhelmed: –26 total rushing yards, dragged down by JMU’s relentless pass rush. Crowder threw for 196 yards, with RaRa Thomas leading the receivers at 82 yards, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace.
What’s next?
To keep their playoff hopes alive, the Dukes now turn their attention to the ACC title game, needing a Duke upset over Virginia to open the door to the CFP. Otherwise, JMU is headed for a third straight bowl game and a new era under incoming head coach Billy Napier.
