Le porteur de ballon cinq étoiles, né au Québec de parents d'origine haïtienne, a choisi mercredi les Tennessee Volunteers au détriment des Ohio State Buckeyes et des Ole Miss Rebels. Il devient l'un des plus importants engagements du cycle de recrutement 2027.
Depuis des mois, les Tennessee Volunteers avaient fait de David Gabriel Georges leur priorité absolue. Ils ont finalement obtenu ce qu'ils convoitaient.
Considéré comme l'un des meilleurs espoirs de la promotion 2027, le porteur de ballon cinq étoiles a annoncé mercredi son engagement envers Tennessee lors d'une cérémonie tenue à son école secondaire et diffusée en direct sur CBS Sports.
"DGG" a choisi les Volunteers au détriment des Ohio State Buckeyes et des Ole Miss Rebels, les deux autres programmes encore en lice au terme d'une lutte serrée jusqu'aux derniers instants. Un choix d'autant plus significatif que, selon le classement Composite de 247Sports, il occupe le 10e rang des meilleurs espoirs du pays toutes positions confondues, le 2e rang chez les porteurs de ballon et le premier rang parmi les joueurs de l'État du Tennessee.
Un parcours parti du Québec
L'histoire de Gabriel Georges commence pourtant bien loin de Knoxville.
Né le 27 juin 2008 à Terrebonne, au Québec, de parents d'origine haïtienne, il découvre le football à l'âge de cinq ans. D'abord utilisé comme secondeur, il migre rapidement vers le poste de porteur de ballon, où son explosivité et sa vision du jeu ne tardent pas à attirer l'attention.
Après une saison recrue à l'école secondaire Armand-Corbeil, il fait le grand saut vers les États-Unis en 2024 afin de poursuivre son développement à la Baylor School, à Chattanooga, au Tennessee. L'établissement s'était intéressé à lui après qu'un de ses oncles eut envoyé une vidéo de ses meilleurs jeux à l'entraîneur de l'équipe.
À son arrivée, le jeune Québécois ne parlait que le français. Il a donc dû apprendre une nouvelle langue tout en s'adaptant au football américain de très haut niveau.
Une ascension fulgurante
Le pari s'est avéré payant dès sa première saison.
En un peu plus de deux ans à Baylor, Gabriel Georges est devenu l'un des joueurs les plus dominants du football secondaire américain. Dès sa saison sophomore, il est nommé Mr. Football de sa division au Tennessee et mène son équipe jusqu'à la finale de l'État.
Sa campagne junior propulse toutefois son nom sur la scène nationale. Il conduit Baylor à une première saison parfaite en plus de 50 ans ainsi qu'à un titre d'État, tout en amassant 1 749 yards au sol et 27 touchdowns en une dizaine de rencontres, pour une moyenne de près de 11 yards par portée.
Ces performances lui valent le titre de Joueur national de l'année selon MaxPreps, une première pour un joueur qui n'était pas encore finissant depuis 2017, en plus de susciter plus d'une trentaine d'offres de bourses provenant des plus prestigieux programmes du pays.
Un profil qui séduit les recruteurs
Gabriel Georges est reconnu pour sa vision du jeu, sa patience derrière ses bloqueurs ainsi que son remarquable équilibre après le premier contact. Son mélange de puissance, d'explosivité et de changements de direction lui permet régulièrement de prolonger les jeux et de transformer de modestes gains en actions spectaculaires. Il est également réputé pour sa capacité à demeurer debout malgré les premiers contacts.
Les analystes de 247Sports estiment qu'il possède tous les outils nécessaires pour devenir, à terme, la pièce maîtresse d'une attaque aspirant au championnat national.

Au moment d'annoncer son choix, Gabriel Georges a expliqué que Tennessee accueillait un joueur déterminé à progresser chaque jour et à donner le meilleur de lui-même, ajoutant que cette décision avait été mûrement réfléchie.

After a freshman season at Armand-Corbeil high school, he made the leap to the United States in 2024 to continue his development at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The school had taken an interest in him after one of his uncles sent a highlight tape to the team's coach.
When he arrived, the young Quebecer spoke only French. He had to learn a new language while adapting to American football at the highest level.

In a little over two years at Baylor, Gabriel Georges has become one of the most dominant players in American high school football. As a sophomore, he was named Mr. Football for his division in Tennessee and led his team to the state final.
His junior campaign, however, pushed his name onto the national stage. He led Baylor to its first undefeated season in more than 50 years and a state title, piling up 1,749 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns in roughly 10 games, averaging nearly 11 yards per carry.
Those performances earned him MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors, the first non-senior to be recognized since 2017, while drawing more than 30 scholarship offers from the country's most prestigious programs.
