WACO, Texas – Auburn (1-0) attendait depuis 2002 pour rejouer une ouverture de saison en déplacement. Perspectives

Avec ce neuvième succès consécutif en ouverture de saison, Auburn entame 2025 sur des bases solides. La réception de Ball State la semaine prochaine à Jordan-Hare Stadium devrait permettre de confirmer ce nouvel élan avant d’entrer dans le dur du calendrier SEC.

WACO, Texas – Auburn (1-0) had not opened a season on the road since 2002. Twenty-three years later, the Tigers rose to the challenge, defeating Baylor (0-1) by a score of 38–24 at McLane Stadium behind a dominant ground game and the breakout performance of new quarterback Jackson Arnold.

A transfer from Oklahoma, the former Texas prep star made a triumphant return to his home state, immediately leaving his mark in front of a lively Friday night crowd. More than just a conductor of the offense, Arnold became its spark, rushing for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His decisive runs, combined with steady game management, symbolized an offensive identity firmly grounded in physicality.

Slow Start, Then a Surge

The contest began shakily for Auburn, who surrendered an early field goal to Baylor after a long completion from quarterback Sawyer Robertson. The Bears looked ready to seize control, but red-zone inefficiency quickly stalled their momentum, as they failed to convert two promising first-half opportunities.

Taking advantage, the Tigers flipped the script with a 96-yard scoring drive capped by a 24-yard Arnold touchdown run. From there, running backs Damari Alston (84 yards, 1 TD) and Jeremiah Cobb (74 yards, 1 TD) pounded away at a Baylor defense unable to hold the point of attack. But Auburn closed the door with a commanding, clock-draining drive that lasted over seven minutes. On fourth-and-1, Arnold burst up the middle, accelerated into daylight, and sprinted 27 yards for the decisive score.

The Hugh Freeze Blueprint

Beyond the statistics, this victory symbolizes a turning point. In the third season of the Freeze era, Auburn displayed a clear identity: offensive power, patience in execution, and efficiency in critical moments. After struggling in 2024 against SEC defenses, the Tigers now seem better equipped to impose their game plan against a quality Big 12 opponent.

“Give Baylor credit, they wouldn’t go away,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said. “They’re a gritty, mature, tough football team. It says a lot about our grit and toughness to hang in there when we didn’t play our best and find a way to win our opener against what I think is a really good team.”

Baylor, on the other hand, leaves with regrets. Despite an explosive passing attack, the Bears wasted too many opportunities: two failed fourth-down conversions in the first half, costly indiscipline (55 penalty yards), and a defense unable to contain Auburn’s rushing attack. Dave Aranda will need to address these issues quickly if Baylor hopes to remain competitive in a tough Big 12 conference.

Looking Ahead

With its ninth consecutive season-opening win, Auburn begins 2025 on solid footing. A home matchup with Ball State at Jordan-Hare Stadium next week offers the chance to build momentum before diving into the SEC gauntlet.
