ATLANTA —Joey Aguilar a frappé fort d’entrée.

HIGHLIGHTS:
No. 24 TENNESSEE OPENS WITH 45–26 WIN OVER SYRACUSE

ATLANTA — Joey Aguilar wasted no time making an impression. In his first start for Tennessee, the quarterback threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, guiding the No. 24 Volunteers to a commanding 45–26 victory over Syracuse on Saturday in the Aflac Kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons.
Aguilar, who finished 16-of-28 passing, ran Josh Heupel’s uptempo offense with poise and precision. His highlight came in the second quarter on a 73-yard bomb to Braylon Staley that stretched the lead. He later connected with Star Thomas on a 7-yard score in the third quarter and found Miles Kitselman on a 2-yard strike in the fourth to seal the win.
Balanced Tennessee Attack
The Volunteers racked up 493 total yards, blending Aguilar’s passing with a relentless ground game.
Star Thomas carried 12 times for 92 yards and added a receiving touchdown.
DeSean Bishop broke free for 82 yards on 11 carries, including a 47-yard dash, and scored once.
Peyton Lewis chipped in 38 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries.
In all, Tennessee averaged 6.2 yards per rush and finished with 246 rushing yards.
Syracuse Stays Alive Behind Willis
Down 31–14 at halftime, Syracuse tried to claw back. Running back Yasin Willis shouldered the load, rushing for 91 yards on 23 carries and scoring all three Orange touchdowns. His 1-yard plunge with 11:54 left made it 38–26, but the failed two-point conversion ended any hopes of a comeback.
Quarterback Steve Angeli, in his first start, delivered a mixed outing: 23-of-40 passing for 274 yards and one touchdown, but also one interception, five sacks, and a lost fumble. Receiver Johntay Cook II was his top target, hauling in six catches for 58 yards and a score.
Notable Absence
Tennessee was without prized freshman offensive tackle David Sanders Jr., the No. 1 recruit at his position in the 2025 class. Expected to debut Saturday, he was sidelined with an undisclosed injury.
Takeaways
For Syracuse, the defeat marked its first season-opening loss since 2020. The Orange face a brutal September schedule with games against No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame, and No. 10 Miami.
For Tennessee, Aguilar’s debut was everything the Volunteers hoped for — efficient, explosive, and promising. The offense showed balance and depth, while the defense applied steady pressure when it mattered most.
